Colorado Springs Airport Open Space

One of the largest parcels of open space in urban Colorado Springs borders the south side of the municipal airport. The 1200 acres contain special ecological features including some of the largest stands of big bluestem grasses in Colorado. The relatively undisturbed parcel welcomes visitors by providing uninterrupted views of the Spanish Peaks on the southern border of the state and postcard views of Pikes Peak to the west. Scenic Colorado participated in the Airport Open Space Advocates from 2003 to 2005, while the airport considered development options for the land. At the end of 2005, the airport officials recommended and the city officials adopted a plan that would set aside about 500 contiguous acres of the rare tallgrass prairie. The remaining acres will be developed with offices, distribution centers, hotels and a golf course that will strive to respect the scenic and natural environment, to the extent practical. Enjoy it when you can.
