September 2003 Newsletter

Friends of Scenic Colorado:

We have enjoyed a productive summer. The highlight was seeing the recommendation of Scenic Colorado approved to expand eligibility rules to use highway LOGO signs. These are the well designed reflective signs at exits along interstate highways allowing the display of logos for gas, food, lodging, camping and tourist attractions. The Transportation Commission of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) held hearings on August 21.

Miles Davies testified to relax the restrictions in a way that would allow more businesses, particularly small restaurants, to place their logos. This would help reduce the demand for billboard advertising by these businesses since the LOGO signs are valuable sources of information and direction. Our proposal was approved. This should particularly benefit small or “mom and pop” businesses relative to national chains.

Scenic Colorado has also spoken out on various issues in Colorado Springs. The Mayor and City Council were encouraged in September to preserve the view corridor for the Pioneers Museum, consider limiting heights for buildings above mature tree levels, and maintain as much open space as feasible in the parcel slated for development south of the airport runways. Also it was recommended that billboards be purchased and permits retired for the new Confluence Park and Red Rock Canyon. Colorado Springs was congratulated on its swift and thorough actions on Red Rock Canyon.

Discussions are proceeding with CDOT to “adopt-a-highway” segment and take responsibility for quarterly cleanup. It will probably start in November along US 24 in Manitou Springs. Let us know your interest in helping some Saturday morning. Also, plans are being made for a membership meeting and education program in the first part of 2004. Your suggestions on subjects, location, and timing are welcome.

A new executive committee is being recruited. If you would like to join, please let me know. There are many things to plan and manage including legislative projects, education materials, event logistics, fund raising and membership development. We need your help whether on the executive committee or as an active member. Write or call us.

Enclosed is membership renewal form. If you have renewed, please pass along to someone else and accept our thanks. If you have not renewed, please do now.

Have a colorful fall season, sincerely,

Miles E. Davies,
President
